This is a set of notable spiritual/travelogue stories by an
extraordinary woman and a worthwhile read.
This book is part autobiography and part travelogue—
and it is a fascinating travelogue that reads very well
(Boal is an excellent writer). Once you start on a
chapter, it’s hard to stop.
Ms. Boal's book is a story of adventure, the deep calling within, spirituality, and surrender. Told with deep and imaginative stories, you will be guided on a path and learning along the way how to pay attention to the very clear signs that show up as guidance. Filled with depth, insights, fun, and edge of your seat excitement...this is an extraordinary female-power-charged book everyone should read! I can't give away some wonderful surprises that took my breath away. You'll have to read it for yourself. But I did find myself asking, "Would I have had the same bravery, inner power, and trust in the journey to make the choices she did"... perhaps. Reading about her story helped me tap into that inner power, so if I am ever faced with something similar, I will trust my inner guidance. Thank you, for this beautiful book... from one woman to another, thank you for who you are! - Julie Cara Hoffenberg
The writer reminded me with each chapter to open myself up to the world, the universe, to adventures and to meeting new people. A perfect reminder that everything happens for a reason, do not doubt yourself and feel free to wander. A perfect book for adventure, for a deep look into oneself and romance and intrigue as well! Fun and I will highly recommend it to others.
“Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage.” ~ Anais Nin This quote is embodied throughout each chapter of Jan Boal’s book, SAFARI FOR THE SOUL. Her personal decision to embark on a quest to travel the world, expand her heart and, educate herself about the plight of endangered animals served up not only provocative personal connections and life-threatening encounters but opportunities as well to “pay it forward.” As her personal Safari unfolded overtime, Jan proved that the key was to listen to her souls’ intuitive whisper and align herself with the numerous universal signposts all around her. This book acts as a beacon illuminating the way for anyone that feels ready to assimilate her message and expand their own horizons.

Love this book. Her journey is worth reading. Her spirit will keep you turning the pages.
The title of this book is perfect. I felt as though I was living the adventure with the author. I went with her as she traveled to Brazil, Africa, Greece, and gave help to a community. I laughed out loud, I cheered, teared up, became angry, and I held my breath. I tasted the food, enjoyed the people, saw the landscape, felt the moisture on my skin, and enjoyed the culture. I got to know people—liking most of them. I learned about different cultures, endangered animals, and various local drinks that I want to taste before I die. I appreciate the way this story was told—the way the book was written is genius. The author allows us into her private space; her soul. She shares intimate moments, secret dreams, and life lessons. She helps us to know that all of us can have the life we know we deserve if we simply… I’m going to go to her website and sign up to do a workshop with my friends and family because Safari for The Soul has changed my life.
Safari for the Soul: The Voyage You've Been Waiting For. Jan Boal's Safari for the Soul will take you there: South through Central America toward Jaguar Country, deeper into South American jungles and the quest to save endangered species, a surprise love affair in the middle of the jungle, and a solo trip back to the states, interrupting her quest for Earthwatch so that she can be the nurse she is after the horrifying tornado damage to Joplin, Missouri. With her, you'll meet the people, experience the leaps of soul enlightenment and synchronicity, rejoin the Earthwatch team heading for Greece to discover a gigantic pod of dolphins, then to Africa to experience Mamba snakes, rare black rhinos, cultural ways of the Maasai warriors. You'll be with Jan's little group out in the African fields of grass when an angry lion attacks, and the Maassai begin to see this middle-aged Nurse from Spokane turning into a warrior herself. This book is about her transformation, and yours. It's a spiritual, ecological, personal adventure of the highest order.. You've been meaning to travel, meaning to change. Now is the time, and Boal's book is the first great step.
A Literary Adventure! Jan Boal takes us with her to several countries as she assists scientists to learn more how to save various endangered animal species, which is not such an unusual way to spend a vacation these days. However, along the way, her life takes so many twists and turns, it reads like an adventure you can’t put down! Looking forward to the movie version of this book!!
Awesome! Had a hard time putting it down. Gave me the inspiration to push forward toward my dream and to listen to my inner voice.
What an awesome string of adventures Jan has woven together!
The writer of Safari for the Soul, Jan Boal, an ordinary woman with a normal job (psychiatric nurse) decides to take some time off of her normal life, and take a combined spiritual journey as well as a journey that helps some of the endangered species around the world. Her childhood background for such undertaking helped, as her family had a long history of alternative spiritual beliefs. Besides, she was inspired by Native American spiritual beliefs from early age on. Most people just dream about such major undertaking, but not Boal—both The Universe and her imaginary inner twin, Gem, whispered to her encouragingly. She planned and researched her trip over many months, a single woman traveling by herself, choosing areas where her volunteer services would be most useful, and where her spiritual journey would also benefit. This book is part autobiography and part travelogue—and it is a fascinating travelogue that reads very well (Boal is an excellent writer). Once you start on a chapter, it’s hard to stop. Among other places, she spent some time in a remote part of the Brazilian jungle helping Jaguar research, in Greece, bottle nose dolphins, in Uganda, gorillas, and still had time to divert when Joplin, Missouri was devastated by a monster tornado to volunteer her help in the cleanup efforts. She even describes her wonderful romantic relationship with a young Brazilian Indian tourist guide (who, as the consequence, lost his job). She stayed in eco camps whenever possible, and worked for such organizations as Earthwatch. Yet she also found time to be a tourist, spending some twenty-six hours on buses to visit the famed Iguaçu Falls in Brazil. Whatever she did, she first listened for guidance and followed the answers she received from The Universe. This is a set of notable spiritual/travelogue stories by an extraordinary woman and a worthwhile reading. She included ten smallish and not very good photos—many more photos would’ve further improved the book. Reviewer for City Book Review.
A journey of connection to humankind, endangered animals, and self In this book, Jan Boal, a psychiatric nurse, shares her insights and experiences as she travels to Brazil, Africa, Greece, and even Joplin, Missouri. This intimate memoir chronicles her self-designed vision quest, during which she assists with projects to aid endangered animals around the world. On a personal level, the demise of a 27-year marriage leaves her in need of some "time away" to heal her soul. This adventure provides that time. Fortunately, her knowledge and previous experience as a nurse often come in handy as she aids people she meets along the way. During the story, Boal's life and safety are in danger more than once, which makes this book a suspenseful read. As a fringe benefit of these journeys, Boal seems to gain a greater understanding of the diversity of the Earth and its inhabitants, as well as, an enriched connection to the Universe and her spiritual self.
I could not put the book down! While reading her book, Safari for the Soul, Jan Boal was able to transport me into her book and made me feel as though I was with her on her adventures. From the first paragraph, not only could I picture Jan’s reaction to her inner voice, I could almost feel what she was feeling. In each chapter I felt as though I was with her as she described the people with whom she shared each adventure and the new surroundings in which she found herself. I laughed as she described the comical ways in which she overcame the language barriers, teared up when she described the devastating destruction in Joplin, I was excited and nervous when she came in contact with the animals she holds dear to her heart and I felt the sadness as she said goodbye to her new comrades (human and animal) with whom she bonded. Jan is a tremendous inspiration and I am honored to have been able to be a part of her quest – even if only through her book. The message she conveys through her writing is a strong reminder of how fragile our planet truly is and why we all need to take part in saving it.
A Beautiful Journey Detailed This is a deeply moving, authentic reflection of the author’s life-changing experiences as a world traveler. Her thoughtful, detailed reflections will resonate with anyone who has taken a risk and journeyed to somewhere new, while her touching description of the work she did with animals during her travels will inspire compassion and tenderness for any reader. I appreciated how genuine and frank her observations are, balanced with depth and meaning in each of her more spiritually-inclined reflections.
Engaging page turner I met Jan when we were both invited to read at the Nehalem Bay Winery. I generally read memoir and fiction, but not so much non fiction. Jan has done an excellent job of combining memoir with non fiction for an engrossing story filled with facts about our environment and wildlife that we should all know. It's well written, moving, authentic. Great job, Jan. Glad I picked up a copy.
